Avoiding Sugar is Sweet!

It’s in almost everything – even salad dressing, low-fat yogurt, and granola. We’re not talking about naturally occurring sugars found in fruit for example, we’re talking about added sugars.

Nutritionists suggest consuming only 10% of our calories from sugar. This translates to about 13 teaspoons per day, based on a daily budget of 2,000 calories. On average however, Americans consume almost 152 pounds of the sweet stuff every year. This equates to roughly three pounds per week, or 41 teaspoons per day!

With multiple names for added sugars like malt syrup, fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, glucose, sucrose, and dextrose, it can be tricky to pinpoint the exact sugary source in our food without closer examination of food labels.

There are known and some lesser-known, surprising benefits to putting less sugar in our bodies. According to a recent health.com article, your skin can even benefit from removing sugar from your diet.

Research suggests that slashing your sugar intake can help lessen sagging and other visible signs of aging.
